Project Overview

artsPlace is a welcoming space that allows residents and visitors to gather to discover, explore,

and celebrate the arts and culture through a full range of classes, workshops, camps, live performances, films, exhibits, and community events. Shugarman Architecture + Design was brought in to lead the expansion of artsPlace in Canmore, Alberta. The facility is a cultural center for the arts where the expansion will feature a 250-seat theatre, multiple workshop spaces, gallery spaces, staff and artist housing, commercial, and B.O.H. The total proposed size of the facility when complete will be approximately 50,000 sqft.

Our role to date for the project includes completing visioning sessions with key board members, a needs assessment on existing infrastructure, creation of a program matrix for all program and how each space connects with each other, bubble diagrams for relations and uses, precedent and massing studies on how the existing building will impact the streetscape. Next steps for the project will include schematic design to assist in fundraising, anticipated to commence in 2024.
