The design for the Ridge Road House focused on creating a modern home characterized by clean lines and a strong connection between interior and exterior spaces. Externally, we utilized a palette of warm wood cladding contrasted with crisp white stucco and grounded by exposed concrete elements. The massing emphasizes horizontal planes, incorporating cantilevered sections and strategically placed glazing to create a dynamic yet balanced street presence within its Calgary neighbourhood.
Inside, the concept continues with an emphasis on natural materials and spatial volume. Warm cypress is extensively used on ceilings, floors, and specific wall sections, creating visual continuity and warmth throughout the open-plan living areas. This is deliberately contrasted with bright white walls to maximize the sense of space and light. Large windows, sliding glass doors, and clerestory windows are integrated throughout, ensuring abundant natural light and providing direct visual and physical links to the outdoor environment.
Key interior features, like the open-riser staircase and the distinct modern fireplace, act as functional sculptures within the space. The layout promotes flow and connectivity between different zones, including double-height areas that enhance the feeling of openness. The Ridge Road House is ultimately designed as a functional and comfortable modern home, where architectural clarity meets the warmth of natural materials, tailored to its site and the needs of its inhabitants.
